What a clay flue liner does
Section R1003.11 of the state's residential code says a masonry chimney must be lined, and the lining must suit whatever burns below it. Clay tile to ASTM C315 is one accepted lining, and a liner system listed to UL 1777 is another. The liner keeps smoke, gases and condensate inside the flue, and it keeps the heat of the fire off the chimney wall and the framing around it.
That second job is easy to underestimate. The code asks for only two inches of air space between an interior masonry chimney and combustible framing (R1003.18). A sound liner keeps that small gap cool, and a cracked or open-jointed one lets heat and hot gases into the brick.
How clay flue tiles crack
Clay tile tolerates steady heat well and sudden heat badly. A chimney fire, or one very hot fire in a cold flue, can split tiles lengthwise as the inside face expands faster than the outside. Settling can crack them across, water from an uncapped flue soaks the joints, and acidic condensate from a furnace or water heater vented into the flue can wash those joints out over time.
Some damage was built in. Section R1003.12 has clay liners installed to ASTM C1283 and bedded in refractory mortar, each joint tight and smooth on the flue side, so a flue laid with dry or offset joints has had gaps from its first day. That is where cracked flue tile repair often starts.
Keeping a repaired flue dry
Every flue has to be big enough for what it vents, and sections R1003.14 and R1003.15 tie flue area to the appliance connector and the fireplace opening. A resurfacing coat adds thickness to every wall, which is why the flue is measured before that path is chosen.
