The chimney pipe runs through the attic or chase, and its joints and spacers are part of the tested system. A separated joint can hide there while the fireplace looks fine.
Can generic firebrick go into a prefab fireplace?
No. The panels are part of the tested assembly, so we order the ones listed for your model.
My fireplace maker went out of business. Now what?

How a prefab fireplace and its chimney are listed
A factory-built fireplace is a metal firebox lined with molded refractory panels inside an outer casing, connected to a metal chimney from the same maker. Section R1004.1 of the Florida Building Code, Residential, requires these units to be listed, labeled, tested to UL 127 and installed to their listing, and R1005.4 applies UL 127 to their chimneys.
The clearances printed on the label were proven in testing with those exact parts in place, from the panels and spacers to the firestops and the pipe. So factory-built fireplace repair uses the maker's listed parts for your model and nothing else.
Where prefab fireplaces and metal chimneys wear
Panels crack from heat, water and log impact, and the metal firebox rusts where water comes down the flue or through the chase top. Metal fireplace repair also covers grilles and air channels that clog on circulating units, and the fans some of them carry.
Prefab chimney repair is work on metal pipe, with an inner flue and one or more outer casings joined by twist-lock or screwed joints. Sections pull apart where framing moves, rust where water sits on them, or dent where boxes were stored against them in the attic.
