Hearth repair questions
Can you replace one cracked hearth tile?
Yes, when the slab under it is sound. If the crack runs into the slab, a new tile alone would crack again, and we tell you that before cutting anything.
Would a fireplace hearth replacement be the better fix?
When the slab has cracked through or sunk, when the extension is too short, or when the tile can no longer be matched. A replacement rebuilds it at the right size in one material.
My wood floor runs up to the fireplace. Is that a problem?
It can be, since that area is meant to be noncombustible where embers land. We measure what the code requires and show you how much floor needs cutting back.

Signs your hearth needs work
A tile that rocks or sounds hollow
The setting bed has lost its bond. We lift the tile, read the back of it and reset it on a fresh bed once the slab proves sound.
A crack along the firebox edge
The support under the extension has settled or rotted. That calls for slab work, with the cracked section recast on noncombustible support.
Hearth sitting lower than the floor
Something under it has given way, sometimes a wood form left in place. The code allows nothing combustible there, so the base is rebuilt.

The hearth, the extension and the code
Fireplace hearth repair covers two parts. The hearth is the floor of the firebox, where the fire sits, and the extension is the apron in front of and beside the opening that catches embers and rolling logs. Section R1001.9 of the residential code has both built of concrete or masonry, supported by noncombustible materials and reinforced to carry their own weight.
Under R1001.9.1 the hearth is at least 4 inches thick, and under R1001.9.2 the extension is at least 2 inches. Where the firebox floor sits 8 inches or more above the extension, the code accepts an extension as thin as 3/8 inch of brick, concrete, stone, tile or another approved noncombustible material.
Why hearth tile and slabs fail
Some extensions rest on the fireplace foundation, some on a slab, and some were poured over wood forms that were never removed. R1001.9 bars combustible material against the underside after construction, so a form left in place is a defect as well as a weak point. When that support settles or rots, the slab cracks where it meets the firebox.
Fireplace tile repair is a separate problem, because tile and stone can fail on top of a sound slab. A setting bed that lost its bond, or repeated heat from embers, can loosen tile until it rocks. Cracked grout alone is a finish problem. A crack that runs through the tile into the slab is a structural one.
Sizing, floors and factory-built hearths
R1001.10 sets a larger extension for an opening of 6 square feet or more, and older hearths can fall short of either size. Cracked hearth repair that rebuilds the slab is the time to bring it up to size. Wood flooring, carpet or trim that runs onto the extension gets cut back and closed off, and the estimate says whether that cut is ours or a flooring installer's.
Factory-built fireplaces follow their listing. Section R1004.2 has the extension installed to the listing and set visibly apart from the floor, and a listed extension product complies with UL 1618.
