Is my chimney real stone or veneer?
Look at the corners. Veneer uses L-shaped corner pieces with the same shallow depth, while full stone shows deep blocks, and we confirm it on the visit because the repair is different for each.
Can a fallen veneer piece go back up?
If it is whole and the backing is sound, yes, with the setting mortar the veneer maker specifies. Glue alone only buys time.

A stone that rocks when pushed
Its mortar bed has failed. The stone comes out, the bed is cleaned back to sound mortar, and it goes back in line with its neighbors.
Deep, open joints between stones
Wide stone joints erode far back. We rake them to sound mortar, even several inches deep, and refill them in layers.
Veneer pieces cracked or falling
Thin veneer has lost its bond, often from water trapped behind it. We check the barrier and lath before any piece goes back up.

Full stone, veneer and thin stone
Stone or rock chimney repair depends on knowing which build you have. Full stone is laid in mortar the way brick is, each piece bedded on the course below, with the weight carried down through the stone. Adhered veneer is a thin layer, natural or manufactured, stuck to a mortar base over lath and a water barrier, or straight onto masonry. The veneer carries no load. It only has to stay attached and let water drain out.
Full stone loses its joints first, and then the stones loosen and shift. Veneer loses its bond, and the first suspect is water that got behind it and had nowhere to go. Thin natural stone, sawn to veneer thickness, is installed like manufactured veneer and fails like it, so natural stone chimney repair on a thin-stone chimney follows the veneer method.
Repointing wide stone joints
Stone joints are wider and less regular than brick joints. The Park Service's Preservation Brief 2 notes that stone with wide joints may need mortar removed several inches deep to reach sound material, with deep joints filled in layers so the fill does not slump. Mortar strength follows the stone: a hard, dense stone can take a stronger mortar than a soft brick can, while a softer stone needs a softer, more permeable mix.
Behind adhered stone veneer
Stone veneer chimney repair has to respect the layers behind the stone. Section R703.12 of the Florida Building Code, Residential, has adhered veneer installed to the maker's instructions or the masonry specification it references, over a water-resistive barrier, with a corrosion-resistant screed or flashing at the base. The industry installation practice, ASTM C1780, covers the same layers in more detail.
