- The code calls for exterior plaster installed to ASTM C926. Over lath that means three coats, and straight over masonry two coats at least half an inch thick.
- Metal lath to ASTM C1063
- On a framed chimney the plaster hangs on lath installed to ASTM C1063. Rusted lath is replaced wherever the repair opens the wall.
- Water barrier and weep screed
- Over wood sheathing the code wants a barrier equal to two layers of Grade D paper, and a weep screed at the base so water behind the stucco drains out.
- A finish that suits the wall
- A cementitious or breathable masonry finish lets the wall dry. An elastomeric coating bridges hairline cracks with a thicker film, so the substrate decides.

Can you just paint over the cracks?
Paint hides a hairline crack for a while, but a moving crack or water behind the stucco comes back through. We open and patch the crack first so the paint lasts.
Will the patch show?
We match the texture on the last coat, then coat or paint the whole face so the color is even. Painting only the patched spots tends to leave outlines.

Block or framed chase under the stucco
Stucco is portland cement plaster, and on a chimney it covers one of two things. Either it is applied straight onto concrete block or brick, or it goes over metal lath on the wood framing of a chase that encloses a factory-built flue. From the yard they look alike, and the repair differs.
Florida's residential building code handles the two cases differently. Section R703.7 calls for plaster installed to ASTM C926 and its lath to ASTM C1063. Over lath the code asks for at least three coats. Applied directly over masonry, two coats are the minimum, with at least half an inch of finished plaster. A thin cement coat troweled straight onto block, often called chimney parging, is repaired the same way as two-coat stucco.
Reading a stucco crack before routing it
In chimney stucco repair, each crack tells us something. On a framed chimney, the chase cover plays the same role. The crown, cap or cover and the roof-line flashing are checked on every stucco job and written up ahead of the stucco work.
