Direct-vent and B-vent gas fireplace venting
A direct-vent fireplace is sealed. Its vent is two pipes in one, with exhaust leaving through the inner pipe and outdoor air coming in around it, ending at a termination cap on a wall or above the roof. A B-vent fireplace burns room air and relies on warm exhaust rising through a Type B double-wall vent, which section 502.1 of the Fuel Gas volume requires to be listed and tested to UL 441.
The two designs cannot be swapped, so a repair keeps the vent the appliance was built for.
Vent tables and termination clearances
The maker's vent table sets the rise, run, elbows and restrictor setting for a direct-vent run. Table 503.8 of the Fuel Gas volume sets the distance from a direct-vent terminal to an operable window or door by the appliance's input and keeps it at least 12 inches above grade. A B-vent terminates at least 5 feet above the highest draft hood outlet, with its cap height set by roof pitch under section 503.6.
Direct vent fireplace repair and new vent runs
Direct vent fireplace repair starts at the joints. An inner pipe pulled apart inside the outer one feeds exhaust back into the intake, and one maker lists a blue, lazy, transparent flame as the sign of a blockage. B-vent runs separate at joints, corrode where exhaust condenses, or lose their cap.
In B-vent pipe replacement and direct-vent work alike, a damaged section is replaced with pipe from the listed vent system, and a restrictor is reset to the position the vent table gives. New runs, whether B-vent installation or direct-vent pipe installation, are laid out from the vent table before the first hole is cut, with firestops and wall thimbles where the pipe crosses framing. Repairs to the roof covering belong to a roofer.
