Mortar and cleaners for a fireplace restoration

Fireplace restoration, sometimes called fireplace refurbishing, returns the fireplace you have to working order and to the look it was built with. The brick stays brick, the opening keeps its size and the hearth keeps its material. A new surround or facing is remodeling, which is a different job.
Old fireplace restoration suits the fireplace where several faults are true at once. Planning them together means each step happens once, in the right order, and every part ends up either repaired or written down as sound.
Checking and cleaning an unused fireplace
NFPA 211 calls for a yearly inspection of the chimney, fireplace and vent system for soundness, deposits and clearances, and a fireplace that has sat unused may have missed years of them. We use that scope from the hearth to the flue, and the condition list is written after cleaning, since a dirty flue hides its condition.
The smoke chamber above the damper is the part people forget. Section R1001.8 calls for its inside to be parged smooth with refractory mortar meeting ASTM C199, the same class R1001.5 sets for firebox joints, so missing parging and open joints sit at the top of the estimate.
Cleaning and repointing a brick fireplace face
Brick fireplace restoration is where damage happens, because soot-stained brick is tempting to blast or scrub hard. The Brick Industry Association's Technical Note 20 advises a trial on a sample area, soaking the brick before any cleaner goes on and avoiding unbuffered muriatic acid, and it notes that abrasive blasting removes the outer surface of the brick for good.
Face joints are cut back to firm mortar and packed with an ASTM C270 mix no harder than the brick or stone, the approach the National Park Service sets out in Preservation Brief 2. Antique fireplace restoration depends on it, since harder mortar forces movement into an old face that cannot be replaced once it cracks. We copy the profile of the surviving joints as well.
