Is the fireplace usable with a few open joints?
Not until they are repointed. An open joint lets heat reach the masonry behind the firebrick, so call (904) 920-5495 and book the repair before your next fire.
Why not use regular mortar or fireplace caulk?
Standard mortar breaks down under firebox heat, and caulk does not rebuild a joint. We use medium-duty refractory mortar, which is what the code calls for in a firebox.
Is the firebox work done from inside?
Yes. Repointing, brick replacement and relining all happen from inside the firebox with the room covered, and we only go further if the damage reaches the damper frame.

The firebox lining and the code behind it
The firebox is the chamber of a masonry fireplace that takes the flame. Section R1001.5 of the Florida Building Code, Residential, calls for solid masonry back and side walls. With a firebrick lining at least 2 inches thick, each wall including the lining must be at least 8 inches; without a lining, 10 inches of solid masonry.
The firebrick (ASTM C27 or C1261) is the layer built to wear. The same section has it laid in medium-duty refractory mortar meeting ASTM C199, with joints no wider than 1/4 inch, so every firebrick repair we make uses that mortar and that joint size.
How firebox damage gets sorted
A fire heats the face of a brick faster than its back, and after enough cycles the face cracks or sheds thin flakes. Joints fail on their own schedule. Refractory mortar mixed too wet or fired before it cured shrinks away from the brick, and ordinary mortar used as a patch breaks down under heat. Water from an uncapped flue speeds up both.
A cracked firebox repair is written up wall by wall. A hairline crack across a brick that is still tight and full thickness goes down as an item to watch. Damage that runs up into the throat is smoke chamber repair, listed as a separate repair.
Brick repair, mortar and the bigger rebuild
Fireplace brick repair comes in three sizes. Open joints are repointed, bricks cracked through are replaced one at a time, and a wall worn thin across its face is relined down to the backing masonry.
For fireplace mortar repair we pick the refractory product by joint width and the maker's data sheet, and its name and cure time go on the ticket. When the backing masonry has cracked as well, the job becomes a fireplace rebuild from the firebox back, and the damper frame goes back at least 8 inches above the opening, as R1001.7.1 requires.
A steel firebox unit inside masonry, which R1001.5.1 allows when installed to its listing, is a different repair, and the panels of a factory-built unit fall under prefab fireplace repair.
