Does the old chimney get cleaned before a gas fireplace insert install?
Yes. Florida's fuel gas code calls for a chimney that vented solid fuel to be cleaned before a gas appliance is connected, so we clean it, then run the liners.
Will the insert run when the power goes out?
It depends on the ignition. Standing-pilot units can light without house power, though the fan will not run, and your model's manual says which it has.
How many trips does a gas insert install need?
Usually one visit once the chimney is ready and the gas line is in. Your estimate spells out the order of work and who comes when.

How a direct-vent gas insert works
Direct-vent gas insert installation puts a sealed firebox with a glass front into an existing fireplace opening. It draws combustion air from outdoors and sends exhaust outdoors through its own pipes, so room air does not feed the flame. These inserts are listed to ANSI Z21.88 as vented gas fireplace heaters, and the listing and manual set everything from the smallest opening they fit to the mantel clearance.
Venting a gas insert through the old chimney
In a co-linear system, two flexible liners, one for intake and one for exhaust, run side by side to a co-linear termination, and one maker's kit uses a 3-inch intake and a 4-inch exhaust liner. In a co-axial system the exhaust pipe runs inside the intake pipe. The manual sets the vertical run, the offsets and any restrictor, and the same maker advises stainless liners where the vent cannot be reached later.
Section 503.5.6 of the Florida Building Code, Fuel Gas, calls for a chimney that vented solid fuel to be examined and cleaned before a gas appliance connects to it. The damper is removed or fixed open, and per the maker's instructions the co-linear vent may run only inside a solid-fuel fireplace and chimney, with no wood-burning appliance sharing the flue.
Surround, barrier screen and the trades on a gas insert
The surround comes in sizes, so we measure the opening and the face before ordering, and the listing sets the clearance to the mantel and side trim. Units built since the barrier rule in ANSI Z21.88 and Z21.50 took effect in 2015 ship with a mesh barrier ahead of the hot glass, and it stays on.
Gas piping is its own trade under NFPA 54 and the Fuel Gas volume, and a fan or electronic ignition may need an outlet, which is electrical work. The estimate names who does each. With a gas insert in a fireplace, installation in a factory-built unit depends on that fireplace's manual, which decides whether an insert may go in at all.
