Why does my ventless fireplace keep shutting off?
The oxygen depletion sensor pilot is the first thing we check. A dirty pilot can trip it with plenty of air, and a room that really is short of air trips it for the right reason.
Can the sensor be adjusted so it stops tripping?
No. Florida's fuel gas code bars adjusting the shutoff point, so a pilot that misbehaves after cleaning gets replaced as the listed assembly.
Is soot on the logs normal?
No. Soot points to a problem such as a misplaced log or a draft across the burner, so stop using the set until it is serviced.

The code limits on a vent-free fireplace
Vent-free gas fireplace service starts from one fact. Everything the unit burns, water vapor included, goes into the room it heats. Section 621 of the Fuel Gas volume allows these units when they are listed to ANSI Z21.11.2, rated at no more than 40,000 Btu per hour, kept to 20 Btu per hour for each cubic foot of the space for all unvented appliances combined, and not the only comfort heat in the home.
Section 303.3 keeps them out of bedrooms and bathrooms, except a single wall-mounted unit with an oxygen depletion safety system, at no more than 10,000 Btu per hour in a bedroom or 6,000 in a bathroom.
ODS pilot replacement and cleaning
Section 621.6 requires an oxygen-depletion shutoff that closes the gas when room oxygen falls to the maker's set point, and it bars any field adjustment. On a log set the system is built into the pilot, so when oxygen drops, the flame lifts, the thermocouple cools and the valve shuts. Lint, dust and insects at the pilot's air opening can trip it with plenty of air in the room, and ODS pilot replacement, with the listed assembly for the gas on the rating plate, follows when cleaning does not cure it.

In ventless gas logs repair the layout comes first. One manual ties yellow flame touching a log to soot, and another names candles burned in the room and fans or a return grille pushing the flame onto the logs. We reset every log to the manual's photos and trace soot on the wall to its cause.
One manual counts an adjoining room only through a doorless passageway or grilles, and states that an unvented heater produces about one ounce of water per 1,000 Btu per hour, with mildew possible in a room short of ventilation air.
