A vented set is a decorative gas appliance for installation in a wood-burning fireplace, tested to ANSI Z21.60, and it sends its exhaust up the chimney like a wood fire. Its instructions require the damper to be held open, with a clamp supplied so the plate cannot close fully, and the chimney it vents into has to be sound, clear and swept.
A vent-free set is an unvented heater tested to ANSI Z21.11.2, and its combustion products stay in the room. It carries an oxygen depletion sensor that shuts it down if the oxygen in the room drops, and its manual sets the minimum room size and other conditions of use. The two cannot be swapped by changing a part, and neither allows wood or paper to be burned alongside the logs.
Log placement matters for both. Logs set out of the pattern in the manual push the flame into them, which makes soot on a vented set and odor and unwanted byproducts on a vent-free one. Service on either kind covers the burner ports, the pilot or ignition, the embers and logs, and a check of the gas connection for leaks.
On a vented set, we also look at the chimney and the damper clamp. On a vent-free set, we check the sensor and the room conditions the manual sets out.
