Why test zones are spaced apart

Masonry holds water like a sponge and gives it back slowly. If we wet one face and move straight to the next, water from the first can still be working through the wall and show up during the second, and the result points at the wrong zone.

So zones are spaced out, with time to watch after each, and a zone that produces a slow, uncertain result may be repeated on another day. That is also why we ask for a dry spell before a test: brick that is already soaked from last night's rain cannot show us much. The spacing is written into the test plan.

Water on the damper from the flue top or crown

When water lands on the damper, it came down the inside of the chimney. There are two main ways: straight down an uncapped flue, or down through the core of the stack from a cracked crown, then out through a gap into the smoke chamber.

The two look alike from the firebox, but a quick look at the top can tell them apart, since a missing cap is obvious. Where the flue is capped and water still reaches the damper, the crown becomes the main suspect, along with the joint between the crown and the flue tile, and those are tested next.

A roof valley that runs into the chimney

Where two roof slopes meet, the valley between them carries a lot of water. If a valley ends at or beside a chimney, that water hits the side of the stack at speed and can overwhelm the flashing on that side, especially if the flashing there was not built for that much flow.

Can you fix the leak on the same visit as the test?
