An uncapped flue collects whatever falls or blows into it. Leaves and twigs slide down to the smoke shelf and pile up there, sometimes enough to block part of the throat. Dry, they are kindling sitting above the fire. Wet, they hold water against the masonry and rot into a musty smell.

They come out by hand after the flue is brushed, since brushing sends more down on top of them. A screened cap is the lasting fix, and the record gives the flue size so the right cap is ordered. A shelf that refills this way between sweeps is a sign the cap is missing or damaged.

Protecting stone and tile hearths
