Building an outside chase

An outside chase is a framed box on the exterior wall that carries a factory-built chimney up past the roof edge. It is framed and sheathed like an exterior wall, finished to match the house, and topped with a chase cover that the listed termination cap passes through. The manual says how the chase walls are insulated and sealed and what stays clear around the pipe.

A chase also needs its own support at the base, whether that is a foundation or framing tied into the house, sized for the chimney and the finish it carries. The chase cover itself is sloped or cross-broken so water runs off.

The footing under a masonry fireplace

The code starts a masonry fireplace with a footing of concrete or solid masonry a foot thick at minimum and projecting 6 inches or more past the fireplace on all sides. This footing carries the firebox, the smoke chamber and the chimney above it, which is a great deal of weight on a small area.

In an existing house, it means cutting through the slab or the floor structure and excavating before any masonry is laid. The footing is its own stage, with its own inspection when the permit calls for one. It is also the part no one sees afterward.

Where the outside air inlet goes

The outside air inlet has to draw clean outdoor air. The code allows it to take air from outside the house or from a ventilated crawl space or attic, and it rules out garages and basements, where fumes or a lack of fresh air would defeat the purpose. The opening is covered with corrosion-resistant mesh no coarser than a quarter inch to keep out leaves and animals.

We place the inlet where it will not be buried by landscaping or blocked by stored items, and where you can reach it to clean the screen. The inlet's position goes on the plan with its height above grade.
