Florida's code also expects the screen or cap to come off so the flue can be cleaned. So the lid should be hinged or bolted, or a screen panel held by screws that are reachable from the roof. Caps that were glued down, or screwed through the lid into the crown, defeat that expectation and turn a routine sweep into a repair job.

Copper caps and the fasteners they need
Copper and zinc-coated steel make a small battery when rain connects them, and the zinc and the steel lose. When a copper cap replaces a galvanized one, every old screw and clip comes out of the crown. Any nearby galvanized part that has to stay, such as a flashing piece a roofer owns, is kept out of contact with the copper, and its position is noted.

A cap sheds rain that falls straight down, but wind-driven rain can travel sideways under a shallow hood and into the tile. Some cap makers offer deeper hoods or models with side baffles for chimneys that stand exposed, and their literature says which.
Before we recommend a deeper hood, we confirm the water really arrives through the flue opening. Rain soaking through the crown or the brick shows up in the same firebox, and a larger hood does nothing about it.
