Bats need a planned exit
Bats are handled differently from other chimney animals. Florida's rule gives no route for trapping or killing them as nuisance wildlife. The practical way out is exclusion, with a device that lets them leave and not return, and only between August 15 and April 15.

Telling an animal smell from a creosote smell
Two very different smells come out of fireplaces. Creosote smells smoky and tar-like, lingers for weeks or months, and gets stronger when the house draws air down the flue. An animal smell, whether from droppings, nesting or remains, tends to appear more suddenly, smells sour or rotten, and builds over days.
The difference changes the plan. An animal smell means finding and removing the source above the damper and cleaning the area around it, after which the odor fades. A creosote smell means a sweep and a look at why air is moving down the chimney. When both are present, both get dealt with.
Openings beside the flue tile
On a masonry chimney, the cap covers only part of the top. The crown around the flue tile can crack or shrink away from it, leaving a gap into the core of the chimney. Mortar missing from the top courses opens pockets an animal can widen. And where an unused flue sits beside a capped one, the open flue becomes the entrance.
Every one of those needs its own repair: sealing or recasting the crown, repointing the top courses, capping every flue. Closing only the obvious opening leaves the others in place, and the animal comes back through them. Every flue and the full crown are checked before anything is quoted.
When an animal comes down into the house
Frightened animals that drop through a gap in the damper into the room are looking for a way out. Give them one. Shut the doors that lead to the rest of the house, prop open an exterior door or window in that room if it is safe to get to, switch off the lights and step out. An animal left alone in a quiet room can find the open door on its own.
Do not corner the animal or try to catch it by hand. If there is any chance a bat touched someone, the CDC advises getting medical advice. Once the room is clear, the chimney side of the job begins: how it got down, and how that route is closed.

What if the animal has died in the chimney?
