Raising a short chimney to the code height

The code sets a minimum height for a chimney above the roof around it, and a stack that falls short can draw poorly or push smoke back down in wind. A rebuild is the natural time to fix that, since the top is coming off anyway.

Raising the stack adds courses, lengthens the flue tile or liner, and moves the crown and cap up with it. Where new flue tile starts and how far it may lean

The code sets where clay tile begins. For a flue serving an appliance, it starts no less than 8 inches under the lowest inlet; for a fireplace, it starts at the top of the smoke chamber, and it runs to a point above the enclosing walls (FBC R1003.12).

The tile runs vertically where it can, and where it must offset, the slope stays within 30 degrees of vertical. A rebuild that goes low enough to reach the smoke chamber rebuilds that starting point too, and you know in advance how far down the new tile begins. The first tile sits on a solid base, clear of loose rubble.

Letting counterflashing into the new masonry

Rebuilding is the best chance to set counterflashing properly. As courses rise past the roof, the metal is set into the bed joints, or into a reglet cut after the masonry cures, and turned down to lap over the base flashing below.

Mortar or sealant alone at that joint fails as the roof and chimney move. Lapped metal sheds water even when they move. Roof flashing is governed by the Residential code's roofing chapter, chapter 9, together with the roofing maker's details, with the base pieces that tie into the roof covering fitted by whichever trade is assigned that piece.

Measuring the finished height

Before the crown is cast, the rebuilt stack's height is checked against FBC R1003.9: a minimum of 3 feet above its highest roof penetration, and a minimum of 2 feet above anything on the house inside a 10-foot circle.

The 10-foot measurement is taken around the chimney in every direction, including toward dormers, a steeper roof section or an addition. A tape and a level from the roof deck give the numbers; nothing is judged by eye.

If the old top was short, the extra courses go on before the crown is cast, so the new height is built in rather than added later. The measurement and the reference point used are recorded.
