Standing-pilot units light with a piezo igniter, a spring-loaded crystal that makes a spark when you press the button. It needs no battery and has few parts, so the faults are simple: a wire that has slipped off the electrode, an electrode that has moved away from the pilot hood, or a crystal that has worn out. The maker's chart says to check for a spark at the electrode and the pilot.
If the wire is sound and there is no spark, the fix is the igniter or the pilot assembly, whichever carries the failed part on that model. It is a small repair once the fault is found.
Carbon monoxide and a gas fireplace
A vented gas fireplace is built to send its exhaust outside, and carbon monoxide becomes a risk inside when that path fails: a blocked vent, a leaking joint, a gasket that no longer seals or a burner running rich. The manuals list the early signs of exposure as flu-like, headaches, dizziness and nausea, and tell you to get fresh air at once and have the unit inspected.
A carbon monoxide alarm near the sleeping rooms is the backstop, since the gas has no smell. Service checks the vent path and the seal each visit. The alarm does not replace the yearly check of the vent.
Ticks and pings from a warming firebox
Gas fireplaces made of steel expand as they heat and contract as they cool, and the manuals describe some ticking and pinging during those cycles as normal. What is not normal is a new noise: a loud bang at ignition, a roaring or whistling flame, or a rattle that tracks the blower. A delayed ignition bang points to a pilot that lights the burner late, and a roaring flame points to pressure or air.
