Soldered corners and sealed laps
Where flashing turns a corner or two pieces overlap, the joint has to be closed. With copper, corners and laps can be soldered into a single piece of metal. Stainless steel can also be soldered with the right flux and technique, and laps can be sealed with a sealant suited to the metal.
Soldering removes the seam entirely, which is why we favor it wherever the metal allows. Sealed laps work when the lap is long enough and runs downhill. How corners and laps are joined on your chimney depends on which metal allows which method. Whichever method is used, the corner is checked with water before the counter flashing closes over it.
Why aluminum stays away from fresh mortar
Aluminum flashing is light, cheap and easy to bend, and it turns up on chimneys for those reasons. The problem is contact with masonry. According to the Brick Industry Association, fresh mortar is alkaline enough to corrode aluminum, so aluminum is not a flashing metal for brickwork.
Aluminum set into a reglet with fresh mortar, or lying in constant contact with wet brick, corrodes where it touches. We use copper or stainless steel for anything set into the masonry, and where a roof requires aluminum for compatibility, the detail keeps the aluminum away from the brick with a separate counter flashing.
Base flashing on concrete and clay tile
Tile sits above the roof deck on battens or adhesive and has a high profile, so step flashing woven between courses does not work the way it does with shingle. The Florida Building Code, Residential section R905.3.8 wants flashing and counterflashing wherever a tile roof meets a wall or a chimney, in line with the manufacturer's instructions and the FRSA/TRI tile installation manual.
Those details have to deal with the tile profile and with water that travels under the tile, which a flat step piece cannot do. We follow them for the base flashing and set our counter flashing over the top. Tiles lifted to reach the flashing are reset or replaced, and who does that is agreed first.
