A screened cap keeps sparks, rain and animals where they belong, but a screen also restricts the flue. For a screen that acts as a spark arrestor, FBC Residential R1003.9.2 sets a ratio: the open area of the mesh must be four or more times the open area of the flue it covers.
The cap has to stand tall enough, and its mesh has to be open enough, for the flue beneath it. Screens also clog with soot and debris over time, and a clogged screen can push smoke back into the room. Checking and clearing the screen is part of every trip to the top of the stack.
Chase covers on factory-built chimneys
On a factory-built fireplace, the flue is a listed metal chimney inside a framed chase, and the chase is topped with a sheet-metal cover. A cover that sits flat collects water, and a thin galvanized cover can rust through, letting water run down inside the chase onto the framing and the fireplace unit.
A sound replacement is made to measure, with a slope or cross-breaks so water runs off, a drip edge that clears the siding, and a collar and storm collar that fit the chimney pipe. The pipe itself stays the maker's listed part, so any work on it follows that maker's installation manual.
Checking the airspace between chimney and framing
The attic, and sometimes a closet, shows where the chimney passes the house framing. Under R1003.18, wood and other combustibles inside the house stay 2 inches clear of the masonry, so air can move between them and the brick cannot heat the framing directly.
Framing nailed tight to the brick, insulation stuffed into the gap, or stored boxes stacked against the chimney all close that space. Some of that is easy to fix on the spot, like pulling insulation back. Framing that was built too close is recorded with its location, because it matters most when the flue liner behind it is also damaged. Wiring stapled to the chimney face is noted for an electrician.
