Keeping clear of the gas meter
The gas meter's pressure regulator has a small vent that can release gas, and a fireplace termination nearby could ignite it or draw it in. The clearance table in the manual sets a minimum distance between the termination and the regulator vent outlet, along with separate distances from mechanical air intakes such as those on air handlers and ventilators.
On the site walk we find the meter and any intake on the same wall, measure to each, and keep the termination away from both. If the best remaining spot is too close, the route changes. Both distances go on the plan.
What the unit sits on
The manuals we install from let a unit sit directly on wood flooring or a subfloor. When it would sit on carpet, tile or another combustible surface other than wood flooring, the manuals call for a metal or wood panel under the full width and depth of the unit. The unit is then secured to the floor or to the framing with the fasteners and points the manual shows, so it cannot shift when the facing is installed or the glass is removed for service. Raised platforms are built to the same rule, with the panel on top. The panel goes on before the unit is slid into place.
The first long burn
A new gas fireplace gives off an odor the first time it runs, as the paint and materials cure, so plan on open windows during that burn-off, as the manuals advise. One maker recommends running the unit for an extended period the first time, with the fan switched off. We start that process at handover, open the windows, and tell you what to expect over the first few fires.
An odor that persists after the burn-off, or any smell of gas, is a different matter and a reason to call. Children and pets are best kept out of the room while it happens.

Will the vent termination be visible outside?
