Cracked glass on a sealed unit

On a direct-vent gas fireplace, the glass front is part of the seal that keeps exhaust out of the room. The manuals do not allow the unit to run with the glass cracked, broken or removed, and a gasket that no longer seals is a problem for the same reason.

If the glass on your Lake Shore unit is cracked, turn the unit off and leave it off. The replacement is the maker's glass assembly with its gasket, ordered for your model, which is covered as its own job, fireplace glass replacement. Running it until the part arrives is not an option the manuals leave open. The diagnosis visit in Lake Shore is free, and we bring the likely parts; call (904) 920-5495.

Lake Shore lies within Duval County. Lake Shore sits inland, more than about six miles from the coast.

How It Works

From rating plate to test burn in Lake Shore

  1. Rating plate read, fault watched

The plate gives the maker, the model and the gas, and we watch the unit try to do what you called about.

  2. Meter and manometer readings

Thermocouple, thermopile or flame rod output and the gas pressures are checked against the maker's chart.

  3. Listed part fitted, leak checked

The failed part is replaced from the maker's list, and every connection opened gets a leak-detection solution.

  4. Burner, logs and vent set right

Ports are cleaned, the logs go back on the diagram and the vent is checked before we light it with you.

Local Conditions

What stops gas fireplaces in Lake Shore

Lake Shore sits well back from the coast, so salt rarely touches the vent parts here. Most faults are inside the unit: a weak thermocouple, a dirty pilot, a worn igniter or a tired receiver battery.

A meter and the maker's chart tell us which one it is.

When the ignition module locks out

An ignition module gives the pilot a set number of tries, or a set time, to light and prove its flame. If it fails, the module shuts the gas off and some models lock out until they are reset by switching power off and on, as the manual describes. A single lockout after a long idle period can be air in the line or dust in the pilot. Repeated lockouts are a fault, and the flow chart takes us through power, spark, gas at the pilot and flame sensing in order to find it before the module itself is suspected.

Burner ports and ember material

The burner is a pan or tube with rows of small ports, and the flame pattern depends on every one of them. Dust, fallen ember material and bits of broken log block ports and make the flame lopsided or uneven. Ember material is its own part: the manual says what kind, how much and where it goes, for example a thin layer over a specific area. Too much of it over the ports smothers the flame and can cause sooting. On service we lift the logs, vacuum the burner, clear the ports and relay the embers as the manual shows.

Receivers, handsets and pairing

Remote-controlled gas fireplaces have a receiver near the valve, which may run on its own batteries and carry a switch with on, remote and off positions. The receiver and handset are paired with a learn button, and on some models a battery change or a power loss can unpair them.

On millivolt units the receiver works like a wall switch in the thermopile circuit. We test the handset signal, the receiver output at the valve and the batteries under load, and replace only the part that fails. A receiver from another model is not substituted, since the pairing and the valve connection are specific to the system.

FAQ

Gas fireplace questions from Lake Shore

Will you replace the thermocouple without testing it?

No. We read it with a meter in place first, because a weak pilot flame or a valve fault can cause the same symptom. The estimate shows the reading next to the part.

Will I pay anything for the written estimate?

No. The estimate is free and in writing, priced upfront with no hidden fees. The 10% off your first service is shown on it.

Pilot trouble, free check

Pilot, igniter or valve, the fault in your unit in Lake Shore is proved with a meter before any part is named.
