One step flashing piece for each course of shingle
Step flashing is a set of small bent pieces, one per shingle course, each turned up the chimney and laid on the roof under the shingle above it. Each piece overlaps the one below it, so water on any piece is carried out onto the face of the shingle underneath.
The pieces have to be long enough to overlap properly and tall enough up the brick to sit under the counter flashing. Undersized pieces, missing pieces, or one long strip bent to follow the slope all leave paths for water. The Florida Building Code, Residential sends chimney flashing on a shingle roof to the shingle maker's instructions, which set those dimensions.
Stepped counter flashing along a sloped roof
Mortar joints run level, but a roof runs at a slope. Counter flashing along the side of a chimney has to bridge that difference, and it is cut in steps to do that: each piece set into a level joint, with its lower edge angled to follow the roof and lap over the step flashing beneath it.
Each step laps the one below it so water runs from piece to piece down the slope. The laps between steps have to point downhill. A counter flashing cut as one long diagonal strip, set into the brick at an angle across several courses, leaves open slots through the face of the brick where water can enter.
Soldered corners and sealed laps
Where flashing turns a corner or two pieces overlap, the joint has to be closed. With copper, corners and laps can be soldered into a single piece of metal. Stainless steel can also be soldered with the right flux and technique, and laps can be sealed with a sealant suited to the metal.
Soldering removes the seam entirely, which is why we favor it wherever the metal allows. Sealed laps work when the lap is long enough and runs downhill. How corners and laps are joined on your chimney depends on which metal allows which method. Whichever method is used, the corner is checked with water before the counter flashing closes over it.

Is copper or stainless steel better for chimney flashing?
Both are durable around masonry. Copper solders neatly but can stain light brick below it; stainless steel does not stain but is stiffer to form. The choice also depends on your roof's metal, and the estimate explains which we recommend.
Could only one side of the flashing be replaced?
Yes, when the other sides are sound. A counter flashing that has pulled loose on one side can be reset, or one run of steps replaced. The estimate says what stays and why.
