The crown seal around the flue tile

The crown is the concrete, stone or metal top of a masonry chimney, and the code asks three things of it: a slope that sheds water, a drip edge, and a sealant-filled bond break where the flue tile passes through, following ASTM C1283 (FBC R1003.9.1).

The bond break matters because the tile heats and grows faster than the crown. Without a flexible joint, the tile pushes on the crown until one of them cracks. From the roof, the seal is checked for gaps, sealant gone hard, and cracks radiating from the tile corners, which are a sign it has already failed.

Checking a stove connector's support, joints and pitch

A wood stove venting into a masonry chimney through a connector pipe gets a specific check under NFPA 211: how the connector is supported, how its joints are fastened, whether it pitches correctly and whether it is secured to the chimney. It also checks the pipe for damage, deterioration, blockage and deposit.

Sagging runs, missing screws, rust-through and joints that leak smoke all show during that check. The connector's clearance to nearby walls and ceilings is measured against what the stove's label allows. A connector patched with tape or sealant goes on the list for replacement. Pipe gauge and condition are written down for any replacement.

A gas appliance vent, end to end

Gas appliances make no creosote, but their exhaust carries water vapor and carbon monoxide, so the vent has to stay clear, connected and correctly sized. The inspection follows the vent from the appliance collar to the termination, looking for separated joints, rust-through, sagging runs, and nests or debris at the top.

Where a gas appliance vents into a masonry flue, the flue's lining and size are checked against NFPA 54 and the appliance's manual. Work on the appliance itself is separate, done to its manual, and a gas smell means calling the gas utility or 911 from outside first. The vent's cap is checked for a screen or hood that has come loose.
