The footing under a masonry fireplace

The code starts a masonry fireplace with a footing of concrete or solid masonry a foot thick at minimum and projecting 6 inches or more past the fireplace on all sides. This footing carries the firebox, the smoke chamber and the chimney above it, which is a great deal of weight on a small area.

In an existing house, it means cutting through the slab or the floor structure and excavating before any masonry is laid. The footing is its own stage, with its own inspection when the permit calls for one. It is also the part no one sees afterward.

The throat and the damper above the opening

Above a masonry opening, the brick sits on a noncombustible lintel, and the throat, the narrow passage into the smoke chamber, begins at least 8 inches above the top of the opening. A ferrous metal damper sits there, operable from the room. Getting that height right is part of what keeps smoke from rolling out the top of the opening.

On a new masonry build we set the lintel, the throat and the damper frame to those dimensions and check the damper through its full travel before the smoke chamber goes up. A damper set too low shows itself on the first fire.

The shape of a new smoke chamber

The smoke chamber sits between the damper and the flue, and the code limits its shape. Its inside height, from the throat to the start of the flue, is no greater than the inside width of the fireplace opening. Its walls lean no more than 45 degrees from vertical when built with prefabricated linings or rolled walls, or 30 degrees when corbeled. They are at least 8 inches thick, or 6 inches with a firebrick or clay lining, and the inside is parged smooth with refractory mortar.

A chamber built to those limits carries smoke up cleanly. It is the part of a masonry build that is hardest to fix later.
