The manual says how a horizontal section of vent is pitched, and different systems ask for different things. One system may allow a level run while another asks for a set rise per foot away from the unit, so the figure comes from the manual in hand every time. The pitch decides how exhaust and any condensate move through the pipe. A section that sags or runs back toward the unit can upset the draft and, on some units, put the pilot out.

Facing materials and the heat they see

The metal face around the opening of a gas fireplace runs hot enough that the manual controls what goes over it. Only noncombustible finishes the manual accepts qualify, which rules out wood, paneling and ordinary drywall on that surface. Facing goes on with a high-temperature adhesive of the rating the manual names, and any joint sealed between the facing and the wall uses a high-temperature sealant.
