Fireblocking where the rebuilt stack passes a floor
Noncombustible fireblocking, securely fixed, has to fill the space between masonry and framing at each floor or ceiling the stack passes (FBC R1003.19). Against wood joists, beams or headers, that fireblocking has to be self-supporting or be laid on metal strips or lath.
Below the roofline, a rebuild passes those points and puts the fireblocking back as it goes. Any combustible fill found stuffed around the old stack, such as paper-faced insulation or scrap wood, is removed and replaced. The gaps are measured so the new fireblocking fits snugly. Access panels are left where the work can be inspected.
Protecting fresh mortar and concrete
New mortar and a cast crown gain strength slowly, and two things harm them early: rain that washes the surface before it sets, and drying so fast that the mix cannot cure. Both show later as crumbly joints or a crazed crown.
Fresh work is covered at the end of each day and whenever rain threatens, and the crown is kept damp as its data sheet directs. The schedule leaves room for those cure periods, which is why a rebuild does not finish on the day the last course is laid. Hot, windy days call for shade and damp burlap just as rainy ones call for covers.
Anchoring the cap once the crown has cured
A cap goes on after the crown cures, since anchors in green concrete do not hold. Depending on the design, it clamps to the flue tile, screws to the crown with masonry anchors, or bolts to a top plate. Anchors go in with care near the crown's edge, where drilling too close can split off the drip edge. The cap is sized to the flue or to the crown for a multi-flue design, and its screen is checked for gaps once it is on. Stainless fasteners are used so rust does not streak down the new crown and brick.
