Measuring how much water the brick drinks

A RILEM tube, sometimes called a Karsten tube, is a small graduated glass or plastic tube stuck to the face of the brick with putty. It is filled with water, and the drop in the column over a set time shows how quickly that patch of masonry absorbs water under light pressure.

The test compares one face with another, a brick with the joint beside it, or a treated area with an untreated one. It does not replace a hose test, but it shows whether a face is drinking enough water to matter and whether a repellent would help once the openings are closed.

The mortar joint just above the counter flashing

Counter flashing is held in a mortar joint or a sawn slot in the brick. If that joint is open, cracked or packed only with old sealant, water running down the face of the chimney slips in behind the counter flashing and runs straight past both layers of metal.

That leak looks like a flashing failure from inside, yet the metal itself may be fine. Testing the face just above the flashing line separately from the flashing below tells the two apart, and the repair may be repointing that joint and resetting the metal rather than replacing it. Both results go on the finding.

Some chimneys step in partway up, with sloped shoulders where the wide base narrows to the stack. Those shoulders face the sky, so they take rain like a small roof. The Brick Industry Association's Technical Note 19B prefers them finished with a setting bed and solid brick, and notes that mortar washes there may not last as well.
