Reading a crack in a refractory panel

Refractory panels in a factory-built fireplace are cast pieces held in a steel firebox, and fine surface cracking from heat is expected in them. The maker's manual draws the line, by crack width, by gaps opening between pieces, or by any piece that has loosened or fallen away.

Once a panel has broken through and the steel behind it is exposed to the fire, the unit should not be used until the panel is replaced. We measure what is there against the manual. Each panel is listed by its position and the maker's part number, and panels are replaced as a set when the manual calls for it.

Pokers, rotary handles and chains

Dampers are worked by one of a few mechanisms: a poker handle that pushes the plate open and hooks at a notch, a rotary handle on the face of the fireplace turning a rod, or a chain running to a damper at the top of the flue. Each fails in its own way. Pokers bend and their notches wear, rotary rods seize where they pass through the masonry, and chains stretch or pull free of their bracket. The repair may be freeing, straightening or replacing the linkage rather than the damper itself, and it is priced apart from the plate so you are not buying a new damper to fix a handle.

Above the damper, the smoke chamber narrows from the width of the firebox to the size of the flue.
