A cap screen clogged with soot
The mesh on a chimney cap is fine enough to stop sparks and animals, and fine enough to catch soot and flakes on their way out. A screen crusted black narrows the exit and slows the draft, and it can make a clean flue behave like a dirty one.
The cap is lifted, the mesh brushed from both sides, and the fasteners checked before it goes back square on the flue.
