An insert that vents through a short pipe into the old fireplace flue leaves its exhaust to find its way up a passage far larger than its collar. The gases cool, creosote collects in a smoke chamber that is hard to reach, and cleaning means pulling the insert out.

Where an aluminum liner fits, and where it does not

Aluminum liners have a narrow listing. The makers write them for Category I gas appliances, those fitted with a draft hood or listed for Type B gas vent, and the instructions rule out solid fuel, liquid fuel and gas appliances in Categories II through IV.

Letting the liner grow with heat

Stainless steel expands as it heats. A liner many feet long grows measurably during a hot fire and shrinks as it cools, and the installation has to allow for that movement. Flexible liner's corrugations take up much of it along the length.

At the top, the insulation wrap ends a short way under the crown, leaving the liner free to move within the top plate's clamp without tearing the wrap. At the bottom, the connection is supported but not locked so rigidly that expansion has nowhere to go. Those details come from the maker's instructions and are followed as written.

The smoke chamber below a fireplace liner

For an open fireplace, the liner's lower end starts above the throat, and the smoke chamber below still has to guide smoke from the wide firebox into the smaller liner opening. That chamber needs sound, reasonably smooth walls to do it.

Stepped brick, open joints or missing mortar in the chamber slow the smoke and let heat into the masonry, and a new liner above does not change that. The relining inspection looks at the chamber for this reason. Where the walls have failed, smoke chamber repair is listed with the liner, so the new flue gets a clean feed from below.
