A wood stove venting into a masonry chimney through a connector pipe gets a specific check under NFPA 211: how the connector is supported, how its joints are fastened, whether it pitches correctly and whether it is secured to the chimney. It also checks the pipe for damage, deterioration, blockage and deposit.
Sagging runs, missing screws, rust-through and joints that leak smoke all show during that check. The connector's clearance to nearby walls and ceilings is measured against what the stove's label allows. A connector patched with tape or sealant goes on the list for replacement. Pipe gauge and condition are written down for any replacement.
Chimney height against the roof around it
Height is set by code: a chimney has to rise 3 feet or more above its roof penetration, and 2 feet or more above anything on the building within a 10-foot radius (FBC R1003.9). A stack that falls short can struggle to draw when wind crosses the roof or when a taller part of the house sits close by.
The inspection measures from the roof at the chimney and checks the circle around it, which is where an addition or a raised roof section can put a once-compliant chimney out of line. A short stack is recorded with the height it lacks.
Flashing where the chimney meets the roof
The joint between chimney and roof is covered by two layers of metal: base or step flashing worked in with the roofing, and counterflashing let into the brick that laps over it. The inspection looks for counterflashing pulled out of its joint, sealant used in place of a proper lap, gaps at the corners, and rust or holes in the metal.
The code covers roof flashing in its roofing chapter, chapter 9 of the Residential volume, alongside the roofing maker's details. The findings describe the flashing only; the condition of the roof covering itself is left to a roofer. Loose or missing counterflashing is measured along each side of the stack.
