Fireblocking at each floor and ceiling
At every floor or ceiling the chimney passes, the gap between the masonry and the framing is supposed to be closed with noncombustible material fastened in place, so a fire cannot race up the void beside the chimney (FBC R1003.19). Against wood joists, the code says that fireblocking must support itself or rest on strips of metal or metal lath.
In an attic or an unfinished lower level, the inspection looks for that material. Open gaps, missing pieces, or combustible fill such as wood scraps or paper-faced insulation are recorded as findings. Gaps are measured so any repair can be sized from the findings.
The thimble in the chimney wall
A thimble is the sleeve a connector passes through to enter the chimney from the side. The code wants it made of fireclay, rigid refractory or metal, and fitted so the connector cannot pull out of the inlet or reach past the inner face of the liner (FBC R1003.16).
The inspection checks that the thimble is intact, tight in the masonry and at the right height for the stove. Cracked or crumbling thimbles, or a connector poking into the flue where it catches deposit, are noted, along with how close the thimble sits to any wood framing. An open thimble with no connector in it is noted too, since it lets room air into the flue.
Flashing where the chimney meets the roof
The joint between chimney and roof is covered by two layers of metal: base or step flashing worked in with the roofing, and counterflashing let into the brick that laps over it. The inspection looks for counterflashing pulled out of its joint, sealant used in place of a proper lap, gaps at the corners, and rust or holes in the metal.
The code covers roof flashing in its roofing chapter, chapter 9 of the Residential volume, alongside the roofing maker's details. The findings describe the flashing only; the condition of the roof covering itself is left to a roofer. Loose or missing counterflashing is measured along each side of the stack.
