Why a round brush fails in a square tile
Clay flue tile comes in square and rectangular shapes, and the corners are where deposit sits deepest, because smoke moves slowest there. A round brush in a square tile cleans a circle and leaves four stripes of creosote running the height of the flue.
The answer is a head cut to the tile's shape and size, with bristles long enough to reach into each corner under light pressure. For rectangular tile the head is matched to both dimensions, so it bears on the long walls as well as the short ones. Heads wear down, and a worn head stops reaching the corners, so each one is checked against the tile before the first pass.
A cap screen clogged with soot
The mesh on a chimney cap is fine enough to stop sparks and animals, and fine enough to catch soot and flakes on their way out. A screen crusted black narrows the exit and slows the draft, and it can make a clean flue behave like a dirty one.
The cap is lifted, the mesh brushed from both sides, and the fasteners checked before it goes back square on the flue. A screen that has rusted through or torn is written up for replacement, since a hole defeats both jobs the mesh was put there to do. Screens clog faster on flues that see smoky, low fires.
A damper plate that will not seat
Rust and creosote build on the damper frame until the plate drags or stops short of closed. Scraping the plate and frame is part of the sweep, followed by working the handle through its full travel.
If the plate still binds, the fault is mechanical: a warped plate, a worn pivot or a rusted handle linkage. That goes on the record as a repair. A damper that cannot close lets room air escape up the flue whenever the fireplace sits idle, and one that cannot open fully chokes the fire and pushes smoke back out. The handle is marked so open and closed can be told apart at a glance.
