The mortar in a firebox is not the mortar in a brick wall. ASTM C199 covers refractory mortars, and the code calls for the medium-duty grade between firebricks. Ordinary masonry mortar is made to handle weather rather than a fire burning against it hour after hour, and a firebox patched with it breaks down again under the heat.
