Type N, Type S and the stack above the roof

The Brick Industry Association's mortar selection table covers chimneys directly. For parapets and chimneys, which stand exposed above the roof, it recommends Type N mortar and lists Type S as the alternate. Type N is an all-purpose mix with good bond and workability; Type S has higher compressive and flexural bond strength, and masons use the two interchangeably where the job's strength needs are met. What the table does not recommend for an exposed stack are the extremes: the hard, stiff Type M and the soft Type O.

We name the type so another mason could check the choice. A mortar sold as extra strong is not the upgrade it sounds like on a chimney.

A stack pulling away from the house wall

A chimney built against a house is meant to move with it and stay against it. BIA's residential chimney note calls for single-wythe chimneys to be attached to the structure with corrosion-resistant metal ties at a set spacing. If those ties rust through, or were left out when the chimney was built, the chimney can separate from the wall, opening a gap at the top. The repair depends on the cause: new ties, work at the footing, or rebuilding the separated section.

We measure the gap at several heights and record it, and structural questions go to an engineer. Where the stack meets the siding, the joint is closed to weather at the face without filling the air space the code requires behind it.

White deposits as a map of the water

White deposits on chimney brick are salts carried out by water as it dries at the surface. BIA's efflorescence note explains that it takes three things together: soluble salts, water in contact with them long enough to dissolve them, and a path through the masonry to the surface. Because the deposit appears where water leaves the wall, its pattern shows where water has traveled.

A band under the crown, streaks below a shoulder, or a patch on one face each point to a different entry point. We read that map before planning the repair. The deposit itself can be brushed off dry once the water that carried it has been stopped.
