Push-button igniters on standing pilots

Standing-pilot units light with a piezo igniter, a spring-loaded crystal that makes a spark when you press the button. It needs no battery and has few parts, so the faults are simple: a wire that has slipped off the electrode, an electrode that has moved away from the pilot hood, or a crystal that has worn out. The maker's chart says to check for a spark at the electrode and the pilot.

If the wire is sound and there is no spark, the fix is the igniter or the pilot assembly, whichever carries the failed part on that model. It is a small repair once the fault is found.

The air shutter and the flame

Some burners have an air shutter near the orifice that sets how much primary air mixes with the gas before it burns. Too little air gives tall, dark, sooty flames; too much can make the flame short and noisy or lift it off the burner. The manual describes what the flame should look like at full rate after the unit has run for a while, and some decorative units are meant to show yellow flames.

We adjust the shutter only after the logs, embers and ports are right, and only within the range the manual allows. An adjustment outside that range is not made.

The glass gasket on a sealed unit

A direct-vent fireplace is sealed from the room, and the glass front, clamped against a gasket, is part of that seal. A gasket that has flattened, torn or come loose leaves a path for exhaust into the room, which is why the manuals say the glass door has to be properly seated and sealed.

On service we check the latches or clamps, look along the whole gasket for gaps and hardening, and replace the gasket with the maker's part when it no longer seals. Damaged glass is replaced as the maker's full assembly. The latches themselves wear, and a latch that no longer pulls the frame tight is replaced too.
