What zero-clearance really allows

Zero-clearance describes where framing may touch a factory-built unit. It does not promise that nothing around it gets hot. The unit has standoffs, spacers built onto its top and sides, and the listing allows framing to rest against them. Everything else keeps the space the manual shows, including the air gap above the unit and around the chimney pipe. Packing insulation into those gaps, or framing tight against the chimney where the manual calls for space, defeats the test the unit passed.

We frame to the standoffs and leave the listed air spaces open. The inspector checks those gaps before the drywall goes on.

Rumford fireboxes, tall and shallow

A Rumford fireplace has a tall opening, a shallow firebox and angled side walls that throw heat into the room. The code makes room for it: a Rumford firebox may be as shallow as 12 inches, as long as it meets the other proportions the code sets for the design, including a throat of at least one-twentieth of the opening's cross-sectional area. A Rumford is a masonry build, and it is laid out from those proportions rather than from a standard firebox plan.

If you like the look, we draw it as a separate option. Its tall opening can push the opening area past 6 square feet, which enlarges the required hearth extension.

Inspections while the framing is open

The inspection that counts happens before the walls are finished. With the framing open, the inspector can see the unit's clearances, the firestops, the insulation shield, the chimney supports and the combustion air duct, and compare them with the manual. Once drywall is up, none of that can be checked without cutting.

On our installations the finish work waits for that sign-off. If the inspector asks for a change, it is made while everything is still open, and the final inspection follows once the room is complete. We schedule it as soon as the framing, chimney and duct are complete, so the room is not left open longer than needed.

How much floor space does the hearth take?

For a masonry fireplace, the extension reaches 16 inches out from the opening, with 8 more on each side, and grows for openings of 6 square feet or larger. A factory-built unit follows its listing. The plan draws it to size.

Can a new fireplace go on an upper floor?

Yes for a factory-built unit, because it sits on a framed floor and its chimney runs up from there, as long as the floor framing is sized for the load. A masonry fireplace needs a footing at the ground, so it has to rise from the lowest level.
