Reading the vent table

Each direct-vent manual we work from carries a vent table or chart that ties the vertical rise to the horizontal run. A unit that exits straight through the wall may allow only a short horizontal run; one that rises several feet first may allow a longer run after the rise. Each elbow counts against the total as a set length of straight pipe.

A route outside the table can pull too little air in or push exhaust back, so the burner misbehaves or the pilot drops. We draw the route, add up each length and elbow, and check the total against the table before cutting.

Supports, thimbles and firestops

A vent run needs support along its length, at the spacing the manual sets, so joints do not pull apart over time. Where it passes an outside wall, a wall thimble or firestop from the vent maker holds the pipe centered and keeps its clearance to the framing. Where it passes a ceiling or floor, a firestop spacer does the same job.

Horizontal pipe keeps the clearance the manual lists, which on some systems is larger above the pipe than beside it. Air spaces around the pipe stay open, with no insulation packed in. Joints are locked as the vent maker's instructions show.

The space in front of a wall termination has to stay open so exhaust can disperse and fresh air can reach the intake. Manuals set a clear distance in front of the cap free of shrubs, fences, sheds, decks and other obstructions. A spot that is clear today can be crowded later by a hedge or a new fence, so we point out the zone when the termination goes in and note it for anyone doing landscaping.
