The apron across the downslope face

On the downslope face of the chimney, water runs away from the brick, so the flashing there is a single apron: a piece that lies over the shingles or tile below and turns up the face of the chimney. Its lower edge sits on top of the roofing so water runs off it and down the roof.

At each end, the apron wraps around the corner of the chimney and tucks under the first step flashing piece on each side, and an apron cut short of that tuck leaves the corner open to water. A counter flashing over the apron's upturned edge finishes the face. On tile, the apron has to be formed over the tile profile rather than lying flat.

Cutting a reglet for the counter flashing

Why aluminum stays away from fresh mortar

Aluminum flashing is light, cheap and easy to bend, and it turns up on chimneys for those reasons. The problem is contact with masonry. According to the Brick Industry Association, fresh mortar is alkaline enough to corrode aluminum, so aluminum is not a flashing metal for brickwork.

Aluminum set into a reglet with fresh mortar, or lying in constant contact with wet brick, corrodes where it touches. We use copper or stainless steel for anything set into the masonry, and where a roof requires aluminum for compatibility, the detail keeps the aluminum away from the brick with a separate counter flashing.
