The footing under a masonry fireplace

The code starts a masonry fireplace with a footing of concrete or solid masonry a foot thick at minimum and projecting 6 inches or more past the fireplace on all sides. This footing carries the firebox, the smoke chamber and the chimney above it, which is a great deal of weight on a small area.

In an existing house, it means cutting through the slab or the floor structure and excavating before any masonry is laid. The footing is its own stage, with its own inspection when the permit calls for one. It is also the part no one sees afterward.

Firebox depth and wall thickness

The firebox of a masonry fireplace is at least 20 inches deep under the code. Its back and side walls are 8 inches of solid masonry including a 2-inch firebrick lining, or 10 inches where there is no lining. Firebrick meets ASTM C27 or C1261, and the joints between the bricks, laid in medium-duty refractory mortar, stay no wider than a quarter inch. Those numbers are what keep the heat of the fire inside the masonry and away from the framing that sits a couple of inches beyond it. We lay the firebox before the smoke chamber, and the inspector can see the lining thickness at the opening.

The combustion air duct

Outside combustion air reaches the firebox through a duct from an inlet on the exterior. On a factory-built unit, it is a listed component of the fireplace, installed as the manual shows. On a masonry fireplace, a listed duct is installed to its own listing.

Where a duct is not listed, the code keeps combustibles at least an inch from it within 5 feet of its outlet, and the passage into the firebox is sized between 6 and 55 square inches. We route the duct as short and straight as the framing allows. The kit's control at the firebox end closes it when the fireplace is not in use.
