The cold start

A flue full of cool air resists the first smoke of a fire, and a chimney on an outside wall can hold air cooler than the room. Until the flue warms, smoke can spill out the front, then clear once the draft is established. That pattern, smoke for the first few minutes and none after, is a cold start rather than a defect. Warming the flue with a little rolled newspaper held under the open damper before lighting, and building the fire toward the back of the firebox, can settle it. If the smoke keeps coming after the flue is hot, the cause is something else, and we keep looking.

A grate that fits the firebox

The grate decides where the fire sits. In a factory-built unit the manual can specify the grate, or at least its size and whether the fire may sit on the floor, because a fire pushed against the back panels puts heat where the unit was not tested for it. In a masonry firebox, a grate that fills the opening from side to side leaves no room for air to feed the fire from the front and pushes flames against the side walls. The grate gets a look on each repair visit, and a new one is a small line item next to the repair it protects.

An outside air inlet that no longer opens

Factory-built fireplaces with an outside air kit have a duct from an exterior inlet to a small damper near the firebox. The outside end is screened, and the code calls for corrosion-resistant mesh with openings no larger than a quarter inch. Lint, leaves and insects can close the screen, and the inside damper can stick shut. Either way the fire goes back to feeding on room air, which is what the kit was installed to prevent. We open the control, check that air actually moves at the firebox end, and clean or replace the screen and damper parts from the maker's list.

Is refractory mortar really different from regular mortar?

Yes. Refractory mortar is made to take firebox heat, and the code calls for the medium-duty grade under ASTM C199 between firebricks. Regular masonry mortar breaks down when a fire burns against it.

Can a smoking fireplace be fixed without rebuilding it?

It can, once the cause is known. A test fire separates a damper problem, a cold flue, a house short of air and an opening too big for the flue, and each has a fix far smaller than a rebuild.
