White crust on the chimney inside the attic

White, powdery deposits on the chimney brick inside the attic are salts left behind by water that soaked all the way through the masonry and dried on the inside face. Their presence tells us water is moving through the wall as well as running down the outside.

The height of the crust matters. Deposits near the roof deck suggest water entering near the flashing line; deposits higher up, just under the roof sheathing at the top of the attic, point toward the crown or the top courses. We brush a patch clean so that after the repair, you can see whether new crust forms.

Water on the damper from the flue top or crown

When water lands on the damper, it came down the inside of the chimney. There are two main ways: straight down an uncapped flue, or down through the core of the stack from a cracked crown, then out through a gap into the smoke chamber.

The two look alike from the firebox, but a quick look at the top can tell them apart, since a missing cap is obvious. Where the flue is capped and water still reaches the damper, the crown becomes the main suspect, along with the joint between the crown and the flue tile, and those are tested next.

Some chimneys step in partway up, with sloped shoulders where the wide base narrows to the stack. Those shoulders face the sky, so they take rain like a small roof. The Brick Industry Association's Technical Note 19B prefers them finished with a setting bed and solid brick, and notes that mortar washes there may not last as well.

A cracked or crumbling shoulder wash lets water into the chimney well below the crown and the flashing, which can make a leak look like it comes from nowhere. We test shoulders as their own zone when the chimney has them. Their repair is priced separately from the crown.
