Can I tell from the ground whether my crown is a mortar wash?
Sometimes. A thin gray layer that tapers to the edge with no overhang is likely a wash, while a thicker slab that projects past the brick is likely a cast crown. We confirm it from the roof.
Can a drip edge be added to my existing crown?
Not in a way that lasts. A drip edge has to be formed into the underside of an overhang, and a crown without an overhang has nowhere to put one. The fix is a new crown formed wider than the chimney.
