A flue tile cut level with the crown

Some crowns were poured up to the top of the flue tile, or the tile was cut off level with the concrete. Most single-flue caps need tile standing above the crown to clamp around or seat on, so a flush tile leaves them little to hold. The practical answers are an outside-mount cap that fastens to the crown itself, or a crown repair that re-forms the top with the tile standing proud and a caulked joint around it. Chimney swifts and the timing of a cap

Chimney swifts nest inside masonry flues, gluing small stick nests to the tile wall, and federal law protects the birds and their active nests. An active nest cannot be removed or sealed in, so a flue in use by swifts waits for its cap until the nestlings have fledged and the flock has moved on. Once they leave, the old nest is cleared and the cap closes the opening before the birds return the next year. Rain that slips past a cap

A cap sheds rain that falls straight down, but wind-driven rain can travel sideways under a shallow hood and into the tile. Some cap makers offer deeper hoods or models with side baffles for chimneys that stand exposed, and their literature says which.

Before we recommend a deeper hood, we confirm the water really arrives through the flue opening. Rain soaking through the crown or the brick shows up in the same firebox, and a larger hood does nothing about it.
