The hearth extension sits in front of the opening at a size set by the listing or the code, and its build-up decides whether it sits flush with the floor or stands above it. Where the outside air inlet goes

The outside air inlet has to draw clean outdoor air. The code allows it to take air from outside the house or from a ventilated crawl space or attic, and it rules out garages and basements, where fumes or a lack of fresh air would defeat the purpose. The opening is covered with corrosion-resistant mesh no coarser than a quarter inch to keep out leaves and animals.

We place the inlet where it will not be buried by landscaping or blocked by stored items, and where you can reach it to clean the screen. The inlet's position goes on the plan with its height above grade.

Carrying the weight

Light as a factory-built fireplace is, the chimney, a stone hearth and the finish around the opening add up. The code requires any framing that supports a factory-built chimney to be designed for the added load. Where the chimney hangs from roof or ceiling framing, or an offset puts weight on a single joist, the framing is sized and headed off to carry it.

A heavy hearth set on a framed floor gets the same attention. The plan shows what carries each load, and the inspector sees it before the ceiling closes. Framing sizes come from the load.

What can cover the face of the unit

The face of a factory-built fireplace, the metal around the opening, gets hot, and the manual limits what can cover it. It calls for noncombustible materials such as tile, stone or brick veneer, set with an adhesive rated for the temperature the manual names, and it shows where the facing has to stop short of the opening or the grilles. Combustible board and wood trim stay outside that zone.

We give you the manual's facing rules with the plan, so the tile or stone you choose fits them before it is bought. Grout and setting materials follow the same temperature rule.
