Not every flue runs straight. Offsets carry them around beams, a second fireplace or a change in the roofline, and those bends decide which liner can be used. Rigid sections need a straight path, while flexible liner bends through offsets that rigid pipe cannot follow.

Poured insulation around a liner

Instead of a blanket, some liner systems are insulated with a loose, lightweight mix poured into the space between the liner and the old flue walls. It fills irregular spaces that a blanket cannot, including gaps around offsets and oversized tile.

The mix needs the bottom of the space sealed first so it stays where it is poured, and it adds a break-in period to the first fires, set by the maker. The tee and clean-out at the bottom

Where a stove connects through the chimney wall, the liner ends in a tee. Its branch passes through the wall opening to meet the stove's connector, and its bottom carries a removable cap.

That cap is the clean-out. When the liner is swept from the top, the deposit falls to the tee, the cap comes off, and the debris is emptied without disconnecting the stove from the wall. The tee is supported so the liner's weight does not hang on the connection, and the opening in the masonry around the branch is sealed so room air does not leak into the flue.

Why the flue is swept before relining

Liner makers call for the chimney and the smoke chamber to be cleaned thoroughly before their product goes in. Old creosote left in the flue becomes fuel sitting around the new liner, in a space nobody will be able to reach again.

The sweep also exposes the tile and joints for a last look, and it clears the smoke chamber so the bottom connection can be seen and fitted properly. It is the first line of the relining estimate, done on the same visit as the installation or just before it. A sweep also shows whether any glaze needs removal before the liner goes in.
