Flame sensing on electronic ignition
Electronic-ignition units prove the pilot with a flame rod rather than a thermocouple. The module sends a small current through the flame to the rod and back through the ground, and only when it sees that current does it open the main valve.
A rod with a coating of oxide, a cracked ceramic insulator, a loose ground wire or a pilot flame that no longer covers the rod can each break that path. The maker's flow chart asks for a steady blue flame covering the rod. We clean or replace the rod, restore the ground and adjust the pilot to match.
When the ignition module locks out
An ignition module gives the pilot a set number of tries, or a set time, to light and prove its flame. If it fails, the module shuts the gas off and some models lock out until they are reset by switching power off and on, as the manual describes. A single lockout after a long idle period can be air in the line or dust in the pilot. Repeated lockouts are a fault, and the flow chart takes us through power, spark, gas at the pilot and flame sensing in order to find it before the module itself is suspected.
The glass gasket on a sealed unit
A direct-vent fireplace is sealed from the room, and the glass front, clamped against a gasket, is part of that seal. A gasket that has flattened, torn or come loose leaves a path for exhaust into the room, which is why the manuals say the glass door has to be properly seated and sealed.
On service we check the latches or clamps, look along the whole gasket for gaps and hardening, and replace the gasket with the maker's part when it no longer seals. Damaged glass is replaced as the maker's full assembly. The latches themselves wear, and a latch that no longer pulls the frame tight is replaced too.
