What zero-clearance really allows
Zero-clearance describes where framing may touch a factory-built unit. It does not promise that nothing around it gets hot. The unit has standoffs, spacers built onto its top and sides, and the listing allows framing to rest against them. Everything else keeps the space the manual shows, including the air gap above the unit and around the chimney pipe. Packing insulation into those gaps, or framing tight against the chimney where the manual calls for space, defeats the test the unit passed.
We frame to the standoffs and leave the listed air spaces open. The inspector checks those gaps before the drywall goes on.
Firebox depth and wall thickness
The firebox of a masonry fireplace is at least 20 inches deep under the code. Its back and side walls are 8 inches of solid masonry including a 2-inch firebrick lining, or 10 inches where there is no lining. Firebrick meets ASTM C27 or C1261, and the joints between the bricks, laid in medium-duty refractory mortar, stay no wider than a quarter inch. Those numbers are what keep the heat of the fire inside the masonry and away from the framing that sits a couple of inches beyond it. We lay the firebox before the smoke chamber, and the inspector can see the lining thickness at the opening.
Blowers and the outlet they need
Some factory-built wood fireplaces take an optional blower that moves room air around the firebox and back out through a grille. The blower needs power from a receptacle placed where the manual shows, which can be inside the unit's lower grille area.
If there is no circuit or outlet there, an electrician adds it before the wall is closed. We place the blower kit from the maker's parts list and route its cord as the manual shows, and the electrician's part is named separately. The blower's speed control and thermal switch come with the kit and mount where the manual places them.
