The unit is the easy part of the price. What moves an installation is the route: how far the chimney runs, how many offsets it needs, what gets cut and headed off, how the chimney leaves the roof and what has to be patched around it.

Decorative tops need their own listing

A plain metal cap on a factory-built chimney can look out of place, and decorative shrouds are sold to dress it up. The code allows a shroud at the top of a factory-built chimney only when the shroud is listed and labeled for that specific chimney system and installed to the maker's instructions. A shroud that is not listed can trap heat or change the draft the system was tested with.

If you want a finished look at the top, we price a shroud from the chimney maker's list, or a chase finish that keeps the listed cap exposed. Anything else stays off the top.

Rumford fireboxes, tall and shallow

A Rumford fireplace has a tall opening, a shallow firebox and angled side walls that throw heat into the room. The code makes room for it: a Rumford firebox may be as shallow as 12 inches, as long as it meets the other proportions the code sets for the design, including a throat of at least one-twentieth of the opening's cross-sectional area. A Rumford is a masonry build, and it is laid out from those proportions rather than from a standard firebox plan.

If you like the look, we draw it as a separate option. Its tall opening can push the opening area past 6 square feet, which enlarges the required hearth extension.

The throat and the damper above the opening

Above a masonry opening, the brick sits on a noncombustible lintel, and the throat, the narrow passage into the smoke chamber, begins at least 8 inches above the top of the opening. A ferrous metal damper sits there, operable from the room. Getting that height right is part of what keeps smoke from rolling out the top of the opening.

On a new masonry build we set the lintel, the throat and the damper frame to those dimensions and check the damper through its full travel before the smoke chamber goes up. A damper set too low shows itself on the first fire.

Is a factory-built fireplace as safe as a masonry one?

Installed and kept to its listing, a factory-built fireplace is tested as a complete system with its chimney. Its safety depends on that listing being followed, which is why substitute parts are not used.

Who patches the roof around a new chimney?

The estimate names who does it. The chimney parts at the roof come from the chimney maker's list, and the roof covering around them may be handled by a roofer, depending on the roof.
